Welcome to the University of Chicago! We know you’ve worked hard to get here, and we want to help make the transition as easy as possible. We’ve put together this quick start guide to help you with all the technology resources you’ll need to be successful during your time at UChicago.
Before You Arrive
Create your username, called a CNetID, and set a secure password to access common UChicago services like Canvas, UChicago Box, Google Apps, and Faculty Access.
The UChicago Card is the official University of Chicago identification card. All first-year undergraduates entering the College are required to upload a photo for their UChicago Card before arriving on campus. This is how you will access buildings, pay for meals, and use the UChicago library resources.
2-Factor Authentication (2FA) significantly enhances the security of your CNetID by using a second device (typically a mobile phone) to verify your identity. 2FA prevents anyone but you from using your account to log into secure University websites, even if they know your CNetID password.
After You Arrive
Connect online to the campus wireless network using your CNetID. We recommend using the ‘eduroam’ SSID which, like ‘uchicago-secure,’ uses an encrypted wireless protocol but works at more than 6,000 institutions across 89 countries.
Canvas is the University’s online environment where instructors and students can manage course materials and communication.
Get your free Box accounts to store and share files, communicate, and collaborate securely in the cloud.
IT Services provides students of the University community with reduced-cost access to a wide range of academic and productivity software such as Microsoft Office and MATLAB.
PC and Mac purchases for personal use are available to students under an agreement between the University and several vendors.
my.UChicago is the self-service portal for University students and staff in the Academic Information System.
